Northeast Volleyball Club is a new youth volleyball program based in Connecticut. The founders and club directors, Cat and Garrett Minyard, started the club with the mission of bringing high-quality coaching to the northeastern United States and growing the volleyball community in the area.
We decided to stay away from the beach culture tropes that are so often associated with volleyball and instead embraced a clean but hard-working aesthetic inspired by the industrial heritage of the region. The main logo, part nor’easter and part spinning volleyball, is accompanied by a typographic mark, a handshake emblem, and lettering. Using the brand system, Northeast is able to produce a wide range of products for coaches, athletes, parents, and fans: jerseys, branded spandex, travel backpacks, practice shirts, warm-up jackets, and more.
Our work on the identity system consisted of brand ideation, design, illustration, and color and type selection. After choosing typefaces that felt in tune with the club’s personality, we made a series of customizations to the letterforms so that they pair perfectly with the other brand artwork and reflect the regional history that forms the foundation of the identity.
In its first year, Northeast fielded ten teams, from under-12s to under-18s, added eight new coaches to their staff, and conducted clinics for players of all levels, from elementary school to high school.
